ADA-Compliant Handrail Components
One of the first steps in complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is to ensure that your business or public space meets the latest handrail requirements. The right ADA-compliant handrail components — including elbows, connectors, post caps, and mounting systems — are essential to achieving full compliance with current accessibility standards.
Are your handrails accessible to people with disabilities?
ADA-compliant continuous handrails are essential for making stairs, ramps, and sloped walkways accessible to individuals with mobility challenges. The ADA establishes specific design and installation requirements for handrails in commercial buildings, public facilities, and private businesses to ensure safe, barrier-free access for all users.
At Aluminum Handrail Direct, we offer a complete selection of ADA-compliant handrails designed to meet these stringent accessibility standards. But to build a fully compliant handrail system, you may need to explore ADA-compliant handrail components as well. From mounting brackets and connectors to extensions and end returns, these essential parts work together to create a safe, accessible project that meets all regulatory requirements.

When Are ADA Handrails Required?
The ADA’s handrail requirements for ramps and curb ramps are found in chapter five, “General Site and Building Elements,” of the frequently-updated ADA Standards.
According to the most recent standards update, ramps and curb ramps are required along handicap-accessible routes when there are changes in ground level greater than half an inch. The handrails must span the entire stretch. Additionally, you’ll need to install railings along accessible routes with slopes steeper than five percent. Finally, make sure to install handrails along ramps with a rise greater than six inches and along all newly-constructed stairways.
If you’re unable to install a handrail, the ADA states that you can use an elevator or platform lift instead. If you’re still unsure about ADA requirements, the United States Access Board has a variety of resources.
Complete Component Selection for Continuous Handrail Systems
Finding the right handrail components is essential for building accessible, code-compliant facilities. At Aluminum Handrail Direct, we stock a comprehensive selection of ADA-compliant handrail components designed to work together seamlessly.
Our Continuous Handrail (CHR) component system offers everything needed to construct fully compliant accessible handrails. Each piece is precision-engineered from high-grade aluminum with powder-coated finishes that resist corrosion and maintain their appearance for decades. From rail sections and elbows to mounting brackets and finishing touches, every component meets federal accessibility standards while delivering the durability and performance your project demands. With a lifetime limited warranty backing every component, you can specify our parts with confidence.
Rail Sections and Connectors
The foundation of any handrail system starts with quality rail sections.
- Our 94-inch CHR rails provide flexible length options for projects of any scale.
- Internal connectors with collars join rail sections securely, creating continuous runs without gaps or interruptions.
- End caps deliver professional finished appearances at termination points, completing the system with clean, polished aesthetics.
Elbow Components for Direction Changes
Navigating corners and transitions requires specialized elbow components. We stock 90-degree elbows for standard right-angle turns, 180-degree elbows for complete direction reversals at landings, and adjustable 5-to-90-degree elbows that accommodate custom angles. These versatile fittings ensure smooth, comfortable transitions that meet ADA gripping surface requirements throughout direction changes.
Mounting Brackets and Hardware
Secure attachment is critical for handrail safety and compliance. Our component selection includes multiple mounting solutions for different installation scenarios. Wall-post mounts provide standard attachment to vertical surfaces, while extended wall-post mounts accommodate irregular wall conditions or specific clearance requirements. Wall-post returns create smooth transitions when handrails terminate at walls, and inside corner post mounts handle complex geometric situations.
All necessary installation hardware comes included with our component offerings. Mounting screws, anchors, lag screws, and wedge anchors ensure proper attachment to wood, concrete, masonry, and metal substrates. This complete hardware selection eliminates time-consuming searches for compatible fasteners.
Post Kits and Decorative Caps
Freestanding handrail applications require sturdy post components. Our post kits feature welded base plates for stable support, available in 37-inch and 47-inch heights to accommodate various ramp configurations and mounting requirements. Ball caps, flat caps, and flair designs provide decorative finishing options while protecting post tops from weather exposure and physical damage.

Frequently Asked Questions
At minimum, you’ll need rail sections, mounting brackets appropriate for your surface type, mounting hardware, and end caps. Elbows become necessary when navigating corners or direction changes. Our staff can help determine exact component requirements based on your specific installation.
Yes, our entire Continuous Handrail (CHR) component system meets ADA Standards for accessible handrails. Each component is designed to work within compliant installations when properly specified and installed.
Standard wall-post mounts attach handrails directly to vertical surfaces with typical wall construction. Extended wall-post mounts, which extend the handrail 3-1/8″ further out than regular wall mounts, provide additional standoff distance for situations requiring extra clearance or accommodating irregular wall surfaces.
We sell all components individually, allowing you to purchase exactly what your project requires. This flexibility prevents over-ordering and reduces material waste.
